Some important dates of Dibrugarh.

1934 : Dibrugarh - Chabuah tea garden started.

1840 : Dibrugarh Govt. Boys School was built. In 1870 it's name was changed to Dibrugarh High School and later in 1965 to Dibrugarh Higher Secondary school.

1852 : Indian Navigation Company started it's shipping services.

1856 : Steam Boats started to be plying from Dibrugarh across the river Brahmaputra.

1882 : Railway Service was established from Mohanghat to Jeypore.

1901 : Dr. John Berry White established the Berry White Medical School in Dibrugarh. In 1947 this school was changed to Medical College or in other words The Assam Medical College. The College was inaugurated by late Honorable Chief Minister Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi in November, 1947.

1945 : The Dibrugarh College was started. In 1950 it was changed to Hanuman Bax Kanoi College.

1965 : The Lahoal Polytechnic was established, 15 Km away from Dibrugarh town.

1965 : Second University in Assam, The Dibrugarh University was established.

1924,1947,1967,2001 : The Assam Sahitya Sabha Sanmilan was commenced.

The Assam Medical College

The Dibrugarh/Assam Medical College was established by the hard and sincere efforts of late Dr. John Berry White. In 1850 Dr. John Berry White started his work on the Makum Tea Garden. Dr. John Berry White was a Civil Sargent of Upper Assam. The death of the workers of the tea garden due to lack of proper medical facility had a deep impact on him. In 1900, He started a medical school by investing Rs. 50,000 of his own money. During that time a person required a lot of money to study medicine, due to which Dr. John Berry White himself would visit house to house and enroll students who are interested to study medicine in his school. so that, some of the students who pass out successfully may help the tea garden workers. During the Second World War, this school was closed down and a Medical College namely The Assam Medical College was established due to the overwhelming pressure of the people. There were three places which were nominated for this purpose,  Guwahati, Selat and Dibrugarh. In 1946, the Assam Govt. formed a committee containing 14 members, the President of the committee was Late Faijnur Ali and the Secretary was Late Kamakhya Lal Ghosh. After a long wide discussion and the last meet at Shillong, the committee came to a decision to establish the Medical College at Dibrugarh - Borbari. In Jan 1947, The Assam Govt. agreed with the decision of the committee and annouced publicly that Medical College will be established in Dibrugarh Borbari. In  3rd Nov, 1947 - The Medical College was inaugurated by Late Gopinath Bordoloi and it was named as The Assam Medical College.
